Emergency locksmith: locked out? Steps, costs and checks
Being locked out is stressful, and stress makes people pay too much. Try the steps below first. If you still need help, send us your job and we will pass it to up to five local locksmiths.
What to do right now
Take a breath and check the simple options before you call. Many lockouts end without a locksmith, and the rest are easier to price once you know the facts.
Try other ways in and ask for a spare
Check every door and window you can reach safely. Ask a family member, neighbour or landlord whether they hold a spare key. Your letting agent may also keep one.
Do not force the door
Forcing a door often causes damage that costs more than the locksmith. A skilled locksmith can often open a door without harm, so wait for help if you can.
Locked out with a child, pet or hob on
Say so when you call. If a child or pet is in danger, or a hob or oven is on, call 999. Tell the locksmith about any risk, because it changes how fast they must act.
What does a locksmith cost?
Price guides from Fantastic Services and MyJobQuote suggest about £60 to £150 for a lockout in normal hours. Out-of-hours lockouts run from about £80 to £200 including VAT, and more in London and the South East. A lock change often costs about £75 to £190.
Call-out fees are the least consistent figure, since some locksmiths charge none and add the cost elsewhere. Agree the total before the locksmith sets out. Ask for call-out, labour, parts, VAT and any out-of-hours charge.
How to avoid overcharging
Overcharging often starts with a low phone price that grows at the door. Protect yourself with a few habits. Ask for the full price on the phone, ask for the firm’s local address, and be wary of a locksmith who arrives in an unmarked car.
The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) approves locksmiths after checks, and it lists them online. We do not vet or guarantee the locksmiths who respond, so check them yourself. Our guide to finding a tradesman you can trust lists every check, and you can read about locksmiths near you.
